Susan had been working in the claims office for a few months. I hadn't paid particular attention to her, only that she was about my age (38) and she had a reasonable nice figure. Water cooler talk a few months after she came to work was that her husband had lost his dot.com job and was struggling to keep their house from being foreclosed on. I work as an insurance investigator and don't have much interaction with the claims staff, but I did have a few brief encounters with her.

Susan was quite striking under the bulky sweater and gaudy dark-rimmed glasses. Her hair was nearly jet black and usually up in a tight bun on her head with a few stray strands hanging down in her face. She seemed shy and rarely would look you in the eye when you would talk to her.

The department ran a 16 hour claims dept., so there was a large group of people working the day shift and a small group on the swing shift. Susan had requested to go on the swing shift for the extra salary it paid. The hours were from 3PM to 11PM. I happened to walk by her cubicle one afternoon and asked her a question.
