I got the short straw and had to do the sales presentation to the regional association banquet. I booked a flight on the commuter plane so I wouldn't have to drive the mountain pass in this lousy winter weather. My boss came into my office and said the airport on the other side of the mountains was closed for inclement weather and I better get in my SUV and drive over to make sure I would be there the next morning for the presentation.

I was not a happy camper! I hated driving the mountain pass and I was worried about the size and strength of this impending snow storm. I left the office, drove home to get my overnight bag and headed for the cross-mountain highway. Traffic was moving along pretty well, in fact there wasn't much in the way of traffic at all. Maybe the weather reports had scared everyone away. I put in my favorite CD and was tooling along at about 65 MPH when it was like someone had turned a switch on and the road went from bare and wet to snow-covered and icy. I wasn't prepared for such a transition and I was going way too fast. One over-correction and I was in a spin and my Ford Explorer went off the road into a ditch and I blanked out.

Next thing I remember was a man reaching thru the shattered driver-side window to unbuckle my seat belt. "You ok?" he asked. I had a hell of a headache and I was soaking wet. Apparently when I hit the ditch a tree limb had smacked the side window and shattered it. I was shivering like a scared animal and just wanted out of that rig. The ...
