Chapter One: My wife and I never had children, but we would open our home to various causes. When we were contacted about hosting a student from one of the former Soviet states for a study abroad program, we agreed. A few months later, Nicole came to live with us and study at the local university. Nicole was almost 25, but only a sophomore in school. When I first saw her, I thought someone had made a mistake because she looked so young. Her small frame and face with large dark eyes made her look more like a 13 year old than 24.
