She put the phone down, wiping the tears from her tired eyes. Why is this happening to me? she wondered. A quick movement at the edge of her vision caught her eye, startling her. The shadow of a tree branch had traversed her bedroom window. She rolled over onto her pillow and peered out into the autumn evening. Everything was going just fine...and now this.

Alana was only nineteen years old, living at home with her single mother and younger brother. Not able to afford university housing, she remained there, commuting even in her sophomore year. She had been in a steady relationship since her junior year of high school, but now things were terribly wrong. She felt smothered-- as if he was sucking the very life out of her. He was obsessively possessive of her, destroying her friendships with her other guy friends, and preventing her from doing the things she loved to do. She wanted to break it off, and told him it was over, but he continued to stalk her.

How can he even think that I would want to go out with him tonight? she thought to herself as she picked up the phone once more. "Hello, Kris? Do you have a minute? I need to talk to someone." Kris was Alana's best friend. She always helped Alana climb out of a depressive mood. "You just need a distraction. Something to take your mind off the situation. Listen, I know this guy..."
