My wife, Cathy, and I had been married for about three years when we decided to move away and start afresh. I had lived all my life in the same small town, never travelling further than fifty miles away. The first time I did, I met Cathy, and after a short engagement, we were married and I took her home. Cathy often said that she wanted to move somewhere else but it wasn't until both my parents had died that I agreed to it. We gave a month's notice to the landlord and decided to find a place to rent in the city when we got there. I didn't have a job lined up but I was a good salesman and I knew it wouldn't be difficult to find work.

Both of us had a hankering for the city life, away from the backbiting and snooping that always goes on in small towns. I was less bothered for myself, but Cathy had a problem with some of the neighbours, especially the men. They all thought that she was a little stuck up. Most of the guys around here flirted with all the ladies, even the married ones. It was no big deal, just an attempt to brighten up everyone's lives. Single girls were considered fair game but I was pretty sure that everyone knew where the limits were for the married ones.
