CHAPTER 1

I work as a free lance courier in a major metropolitan area. It's not the career I envisioned for myself after four years of college, a football scholarship and subsequent entry-level job for one of the nation's top engineering companies. But, with tightening budgets and a tough economy, those of us on the way up usually found ourselves on the way out.

At first, I just needed a job to pay the rent and put some food on the table. You know, the typical fast food assistant to the assistant manager jobs. One day, the restaurant I was working at got a delivery from the company that did our payroll services and taxes. A courier on a bike brought them in, and the first thing I noticed was how happy this guy was, how all the women turned their heads when he walked in the restaurant, and how much fun this guy was having riding a bike all over the city for a living.

The next time the guy came in, I asked him if he made good money in the courier business and how he got started. He told me that corporations and businesses pay great. They would rather hire a courier than have one of their on-salary people away from the office in city traffic for hours at a time.
