I came rolling out of the desert just after sunset. It had been a long and hot task, but it was done. The agreement was complete. The clerk was fairly young, probably in her early twenties. She looked to be in good shape, with nice jugs and a flat stomach. She made a rude comment, "What's the matter, can't you read? The sign on the door says pay for your gas before shopping."

I glanced around the store. I was the only one there. I asked, "Why? Can't you keep track of one person?"

"I don't give a fuck. That's the rule. That'll be eighteen-fifty-two." She held her hand out for the cash.
