The business class section of the jumbo jet was only about half full. I was on a mid-week flight from Los Angeles to Chicago with an expected 40-minute stop in Houston. I had taken this trip several times and was used to the routine. I would have preferred to take a non-stop flight but the company wouldn't pay the extra $120. Oh, well, it only added about forty-five minutes to the flight time.

Takeoff from LA was on time (wonder of wonders) and the pilot had come on the radio shortly thereafter to let us know that the weather was turning bad in the Houston area but we should still make it in close to on time. 'Yeah, right', I thought, 'I'll believe that when it happens.'

Anyway, the flight leg from LA to Houston was pretty good. The cabin was attended by two stewardesses (stewardi? Ah hell, flight attendants of the female variety.) One was a tall blonde with long legs and a killer figure. The other was a short redhead, not fat but certainly not supermodel-thin. Classic, contemporary versions and ideals of beauty dictated watching the taller of them but it was to the redhead ...
