For the grand occasion of my thirtieth birthday, my mother had planned a big party, although her idea of a party is somewhat different to mine. She'd hired the church hall, invited the "flock"- those who were still able to remember my churchgoing days- and roped my uncle into singing, as if things couldn't be worse... Then there were my friends, who were planning a "surprise" bash at a favourite nightclub in town. I was supposed to know nothing about it, but my best friend Dee, bless his stilletto heels, had blabbed everything to me one drunken night. And in my office, which so closely resembled hell with its red walls and fiery, evil supervisor, there were rumours of a cake and drinks being planned. Thirty, with only the prospect of further birthdays to look forward to, more of the same old shite. The stress of thinking about it all brought on an unwelcome bout of insomnia, and after three days of it, I was twitchy and frantic and feeling trapped.
