Not Such a Bad Neighborhood

Picking up and moving is never easy but when you do it with only one year left in high school, it's worse. Suddenly, I had to adjust to a new school, try to make new friends and had only one year to do it. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad. I would be going off to college next fall and I might not be that homesick, missing high school friends and such. I would definitely get that out of the way this year. It was supposed to be a really good school anyway and would probably better prepare me for college. I understood why we moved. My father had gotten a big promotion with a transfer and they wanted to live in a better neighborhood. Of course, being black and moving to an all-white neighborhood wouldn't be easy. In fact, one family's house went on sale only a couple days after we moved in. That seemed a little strange. However, most families welcomed us or, at least, tolerated us. Our new next door neighbor Ms. Williams was even better.

Ms. Williams greeted us the first day me moved in and even helped my mother unpack some things. She helped us settle in to our new place and became fast friends with my mother. She told my mother she had been really close to the last woman who lived there and hoped they would have the same relationship too. They did, spending days together shopping, going to the club or just having coffee in the morning. This more and more seemed like the correct move.
