I eased up out of the couch upon hearing the doorbell on this late afternoon. I moved slow these days due to the extra weight I carried. I was eight months pregnant. My neighbor Amy was at the door. I hadn't talked with her for a few months. I asked her to come in. Amy had her long auburn hair in a ponytail and wore gray sweats. She looked great even without any makeup on. She was ten years younger than me but we were close enough in age to have similar tastes. We both liked listening to old R.E.M. songs and we loved watching Law & Order on TV. After making a fresh pot of coffee we moved into the living room and sunk into the couch.

"You've gotten so huge Karen," Amy said.

"Yeah, and I'm not done yet. I still have another four weeks until the baby is due." I apologized for looking like a slob. I was wearing an old blouse and a green pair of elastic shorts, but I was comfortable.

"I'm sorry that I've been so scarce but we've been so busy at the office lately. We landed a new contract with the city and I've been working seven days a week."

"Well, you got to do what you got to do."

"Have you seen Steve lately?" she asked.
