It was a beautiful, clear summer's day. The couple parked their metallic blue Lexus in an almost deserted car park, somewhere in the New Forest. They climbed out and looked around them. The sun shone through the trees, light falling in dappled patches on soft, mossy ground. A bird sang in the distance. There was no noise to suggest civilisation other than the muted tick of their car's engine as it cooled down.

The man consulted an Ordnance Survey map, and pointed towards a footpath.

"Come on, Lisa," he said. "It's this way."

He retrieved a rucksack from the boot of the car before they set off on the path he had indicated. She was wearing a sleeveless dress made from light and prettily patterned cotton, and a sensible pair of trainers on her feet. He wore a polo shirt, a pair of chinos and a stout pair of boots. They held hands and talked quietly to each other as they followed the well-trodden footpath.

They walked for about an hour, occasionally stopping for a sip of water from a bottle in the man's rucksack. They passed no other people. Small birds flitted from tree to tree as they passed. The woman asked what they were.
