Monday morning, and before ten o'clock, I'd had to give a speech in front of five hundred people, replace three sick employees at an hours notice and face down three angry parents, irate about mistakes they imagined the school had made. Being a head teacher is a 70-hour-a-week job and already the week was off to a flying start. I decided to talk a walk and pounce on any potential crises. The school is open-plan, which means that I don't have to open any doors to visit the classes. I can just walk around, talking to teachers and sorting out any problems as they occur. Even the toilets have no doors so that we can be sure no mishaps occur. In fact, my office is just about the only room in the building with a door, and I relish my little haven of privacy. Nothing seemed to be going wrong yet and so I went into my sanctuary. I've made it homely with a two-piece sofa in one corner for greeting visitors, and a large oak desk that I rarely get to see under the flurry of documents.

I sat down and, almost as if there was a buzzer hidden in the seat - the phone started ringing.

"It's the new trainee, Mr. Black," said the lady at the front desk.

Back when I was younger and training to be a teacher, I had my way with several of the other trainees. I guess I had a certain geeky appeal that attracted some of the equally geeky girls. More likely is that I couldn't have failed to get lucky when only four of the eight trainees ...
