This is the story I submitted for Story Challenge IV. I have posted this story in the same form as it was when submitted to the challenge, no corrections or modifications. I'm posting it this way so those that want to can read the critiques and will be able to see what the judges were talking about. HEARTLAND By Comshaw

"Damn it's hot," Jim muttered to himself ,"Must be 100 degrees if it's anything." It was the first of July and the small town they were setting up in was in western Kansas. He wiped his brow, then picked up a box from the back of the truck and headed for the tent.

He'd been with the Stokes carnival for almost a year. He had wandered into the midway one evening looking for a diversion, something to occupy his time and take his mind off his troubles. When he had caught sight of the 'Help Wanted' sign, he had stood staring at it for almost ten minutes. His life at that moment was a pile of shit. The job promotion that should have been his, had gone to the bosses nephew, his car had decided to give up and die and his girlfriend told him she was in love with his best friend and was moving in with him.
