They'd been doing the show for two weeks, but the place was still more than half empty. Another week or two like this and he'd be back doing birthday parties and mall openings. Martin Madden (a.k.a. Martin Magick) didn't understand it. At 31, he had studied his craft long enough to put on a good show. When he decided to make the move to the big time hotels of Reno, all of the magicians in his circle of friends told him he was doing the right thing. But here he was, two weeks into his big career move, and he was at his wit's end over what to do about the show. As usual, Martin and his assistant had run through the show flawlessly, and were now preparing for the act's finale, a variation on Houdini's famous Metamorphosis. Martin's version used a coffin instead of the traditional (and boring) steamer trunk. His assistant, Rachel, waited for him to climb into the coffin, then smiled at him as she brought down the lid.

Rachel had been recommended to him by a friend, who knew of the girl's show business aspirations and had heard he was looking to upgrade his act. Barely out of high school, Rachel hadn't known much about stage magic, but she was eager to learn and always followed his instructions to the letter. She had long black hair, brown eyes and a centerfold-type figure. She looked fantastic in all the costumes, and even said she wouldn't have a problem doing the act topless if they ever got an evening booking in one of the big hotels.
