Chapter 1

Willing her battered and barely running gray Toyota through the narrow one way streets of downtown Louisville, Leann Manning clumsily pressed the brakes trying to stop, cursing the whole time, as a group of teenagers on skateboards poured out into the streets in front of her. If Leann was something, it was punctual, and she was running late for her weekly appointment at Hiedi's Hair and Nail Heaven. As she chainsmoked, looking for a place to park, Leann angrily thought back to the reason she was running late, a vicious argument with her daughter, Vicki.

"WHAT! Who the hell told you that? You'd believe Elvis was running for President if those stupid bitches down at the salon told you so," Vicki shot back.

"I know what I read in the papers little girl, the crime rate in this town had tripled since those people moved in," Leann offered confidently. ...
