Aaron hurried through the house, checking everything. The housekeeper had been by earlier that day, so he didn't need to worry about cleaning. Everything needed to be just right, though, and he wasn't leaving anything to the last minute.

Candles stood on the coffee table and the mantle above the fireplace, just waiting to be lit. China plates borrowed from his friend's wife sat on the table, ready to be filled. Crystal flutes stood in front of the plates. Scattered around the table were giant throw pillows for reclining.

With an hour left before Diana arrived, Aaron stepped into the shower. Steam rose up around him as he washed, making sure that everything was as clean as he could get it. Then, turning the fogless mirror toward him, he carefully shaved, going slowly in order to avoid any nicks. Nothing was going to mar this evening.

Stepping out of the shower, he dried off. As he moved toward the sink to brush his teeth, he smiled. Could it only be a year since he had met Diana? And in the toothpaste aisle, nonetheless! Who would have thought his choice of toothpaste would so greatly affect the rest of his life.
