A Fire to Put Out

Megan tensed when she felt the resounding thuds coming from her left rear wheel. The thump-thump-thump could only mean one thing, and the petite blond knew exactly what that sickening sound signified: a flat tire-- and at the worst possible time. Crossing her fingers for good luck, she checked the mirror and deftly guided her car along the side of the road, letting the speed decrease as she looked for a side road on which to pull over. She had not seen another vehicle for quite a while; and the pretty school teacher, trying to get home for the week end, had no idea how to even begin to change a flat.

"Where was a man when you needed one?" she sighed, remembering all too well that she was presently without one in her life.

Exiting the car dejectedly, Megan approached the offending wheel. One glance confirmed her suspicion, and with the shadows lengthening, it was obvious night would soon be descending on the verdant countryside. The signs and sounds of spring abounded everywhere. It was a beautiful evening; crickets, fireflies and peep frogs were in evidence around her, but she was too upset to enjoy their joyous music.

Stoically, Megan opened the trunk hoping against hope that some passerby ...
