Chapter Three

The coffee shop was filling up with stragglers from the taverns along the street. The customers were almost invariably loud and obnoxious, hollering and hooting with drunken ferocity, trying to pinch the waitresses and generally making fools out of themselves as drunks were wont to do.

Kat and Paul found the last unoccupied table and pulled up chairs. A harried waitress came buy and they ordered coffee and pie.

Kat took a deep breath. It was hard to keep her vows in mind with Paul in front of her. His slightly long hair and sparkling eyes were distracting her. SO she looked out the window instead and began.

"Listen, Paul. I have to tellyou some things, so that you understand my position." She stopped, looking uncharacteristically discomposed. "This isn't easy for me." ...
