The audience was abuzz with anticipation. The noise emanating from the great room was not overtly loud or boisterous, but the insistently pervasive murmurings of an expectant crowd were not to be ignored either. Even back stage, shielded behind the old musty velvet drapes, the distracted performer perceived the muffled sound and translated it into appropriate emotions. Tonight nothing was distinguishable from that of hundreds of times before and yet there was a singularity too, for fate awaited and this evening's performance would be like nothing that had ever preceded it before. After tonight, Ingrid Abbott would never be the same again.

Peering out into the auditorium from between the folds of the curtain, Ingrid nervously awaited her turn to take the stage. After all this time, the audience looked like any one of the myriad she had performed for over the past twelve years; and with a shrug to loosen the tightness in her shoulders, the dusky beauty strode purposefully out from the wings. Forcing a smile to her full lips, the tiny performer steadied herself, assumed her pose; and then with a nod, cued the music ...
