The Meeting

The sound of the huge jet echoed through the cavernous airport terminal, the reverberations rattling the singular ash tray sitting on the table beside Marc's seat. The oppressive noise came and went, building to a crescendo, then fading into the distance, as the endless procession of gleaming planes taxied out from the jet-way only to be replaced by similar craft returning from the clear azure sky. He drummed his fingers on the stained tabletop, unable to restrain his growing anxiety, as he stared at the gate. She would be here soon, and everything they had shared, planned, discussed was about to change from a dream into flesh and blood reality.

Sitting alone away from the other passengers and their friends, the quiet yet prepossessing man was oblivious to the bustle around him. He had picked his spot carefully. From here he would see her gate, obviously a necessity, but at the same time he was almost totally segregated from the throng milling about in the reception area. He had planned and rehearsed what he would say to her, how they would greet-- every detail and nuance. He intended for her to be at least a little impressed, if that was in any way within his power.

Marc was not a large man, but still the drape of his sweater gave ...
