The day I arrived at Howard University was one of the most optimistic days of my life. This would be a new start for me. I was wound really tight in High School, and shy and awkward with the ladies. As I unloaded my bags out of my car, it seemed like there were attractive women everywhere, all wearing tight summer shirts and short shorts. Yup, my luck was sure to change.

I lugged my bags around and got my room assignment. I found that my roommate, Billy, was already unloading his gear. We had spoken on the phone, so we weren't total strangers.

"Oh hey James, glad you could finally make it," he smiled. I smiled back, where a lot of people would have scowled. Billy was gay—he was up front about it from the start. I think he was glad to have a straight roommate who didn't give a shit what he was, as long as he had the right taste in music.

He was a sophomore, and it was only my freshmen year. "Look," he said, "I'm unpacking everything here, but like I said, I'm going to be over at my boy's room most of the time. So it's a lot like have a really large single all to yourself."

"Fine with me. Not like I'll be needing it anyways." ...
