It was Friday and Deana's 39th birthday. The whole gang was going to get together and celebrate the last one before the big four o. Jay was told and asked and cajoled by friends and Deana alike.

"It won't be the same if you're not there."

But Jay's heart wasn't really into it. He'd come home from a job that had taken him away from home again and had come home to an empty partially thrashed house. Lee had run off again. The table full of empties paying mute testimony to events while he was gone. Lee and Joy had sat up drinking again and Lee had gotten it into her head to take off, leaving an unintelligible scrawl that he knew said her son Keith was at his Dad's house. It was really too bad about Lee, she'd done so much to help him when he'd built the place. But while adversity was doable for her, prosperity wasn't, and since they'd married and worked on what amounted to finishing touches, she'd spun out of control. Now 5 out of 7 days saw her bombed out of her skull. Drinking into blackout if not outright pass out. Unwilling to speak to him about whatever demons were driving her, pushing him away with her behavior, she'd crossed the line that he had drawn in the sand when he'd demanded she choose.

"Budweiser or me," Jay had said.

She'd cried and carried on and swore she'd check into the outpatient ...
