Our trip back down the hill a few minutes later was as quiet as the trip up was before it. I stared out the front windshield of Ted's truck, but saw his occasional sideways glance at me every minute or so. I'm sure I was the picture of concentration to him, as I folded my lower lip back and forth between my thumb and index finger.

'Fix the damned problem!' Ted had said, as though there was just a single challenge facing me. I knew he was referring to the lack of communication in my marriage. Was that really the only problem? Was everything else a symptom of that? If that was so, then I bore equal responsibility for the whole mess. Did I really believe that? Was it as simple as that?
