Vicki had been feeling morose. Her upcoming 55th birthday was, in a way, even harder to take than her 50th. The 50th had been a milestone all right. But one that had been celebrated in jest with her by family and friends. This had made the event bearable.

The upcoming double nickel wasn't quite so welcome. Not that it was obvious, but it too screamed milestone by it's very makeup of numbers. Unlike the 50th where the day had been with her, this one was at her. She could check off all the little things that seemed to weigh her down, from the change of life that she had finally finished, to the little aches and pains that seemed at times to overwhelm her. What it came down to was, she was getting older whether she wanted to or not.

It wasn't helping that Dave her husband wasn't overly sympathetic. But then again, he had not only survived his, but in a way had cheated while doing so. He had taken himself on a North Dakota bison hunt during and for his birthday. She wasn't so fortunate. The outdoor things she enjoyed were not so easily done in the dead of winter. The indoor activities continued on pretty much the same year round. She worked indoors, she had activities and pastimes she enjoyed indoors. But she needed the outdoors to stretch her soul and breathe. Her garden was slumbering for the winter. Her favorite nude beach was closed. She hadn't been on her bike in a month. White water rafting had to wait until spring. It was to early to cross country ski. And once again, they didn't have the money for the long awaited tour of New Zealand. ...
