Charmaine Crowelle watched as her family was executed one by one. She saw her elder brother, William, beaten by the Polis and dragged away to the county gaol. When the Polis returned they took her mother from her bedchamber, dragging her by her lovely brunette hair to the courtyard. There, as Charmaine watched from a second floor window they tore at her clothing ripping her beautiful mahogany satin gown to pieces baring her flesh. They pinned her down on the dirt yard and lifted her skirt, when first they'd tried to do it she'd kicked and screamed, but she was held down the second time and socked in the stomach. Charmaine looked away knowing she could do nothing. She knew she would die before she let the Polis take her away or touch her in any way.

Her father, Bronto, and her brother were taken from their gaols and killed on the same day. She knew that the county gathered at the event because they were both hanged in the public's view. She was now the last remaining Crowelle, known to the Polis and the people as The Charmaine.
