Fog covered the early morning landscape, trying to hold on to the cool night, but the sun would burn it off, and the temperatures would send people swimming by the afternoon. Tanya did not seem inclined to get up, so I climbed out of the tent by myself in search of breakfast. Our tent was near the edge of camp, since we were only visitors. Many of the workers were already at the dig, carefully brushing the centuries from the Mediterranean hillside.

I found the "kitchen" and secured some fried eggs and juice and sat down to eat. I still marveled at the chance that had allowed us to work for three days at an archaeological excavation as part of our vacation. The work itself was painstaking and tedious, [I wouldn't have had the patience needed], but it was fascinating to see the ancient relics uncovered, to glimpse a world that was gone.

Tanya joined me after a bit and gave me a quick kiss before finding some toast to start her day. Late yesterday they had opened a new section and Tanya and I would be working there. Sleeping on the ground and brushing away dirt all day are not the most cosmetic activities. Yet Tanya always looked good whether she was dressed in silk or leather or covered in dust.

All morning we worked carefully together sifting through the dirt. Gradually we exposed more of the stone wall that faced us. In the afternoon the other workers headed away from the dig for their mid-day ...
