The Christmas Tree (c) december 2001

The night was cold, arctic chilly with stinging pellets of icy snow riddling the air. Victor was ready to close up. Christmas Eve hardly anyone bought trees. He had just reached to turn out the lights on the lot, when he saw them. The lovely blond woman, shivering in a much too light coat, who lived across the street, with her three little ones. They were towing a little red wagon, and obviously on their way to his lot.

Victor had spent a lot of time these last couple of weeks watching them, and listening to their laughter and joy in one another. It was plain to see they didn't have much money, or many things but they had much of what he would give all his cash for if only he had the chance. They had happiness and a loving family.

Victoria better known to her friends as Vicki had to wait until payday to get a Christmas tree. She really couldn't afford one, but God knew there would be little enough under it .She had to have a tree for the kids. No Christmas was complete if you did not have a tree.

He watched them wander the lot, and finally approached them.

"Having trouble finding a tree?" He asked.
