PART 1: ANGELA

Before I tell you about Angela, let me tell you about my partner Jerry.

When Jerry was first assigned to my squadron and to the dining hall at which I worked, I didn't think I liked him that much. He was quiet, kept to himself, and always seemed to be watching people a little too closely, as if he were trying to read everyone he encountered. So when he started making conversation with me, my guard went up right away. After a while however, I came to realize that the very traits that made me wary of Jerry were traits that he and I shared. I was quiet and reserved too. I took my time getting to know a person just so I could be sure that person was someone I really wanted to know. So Jerry and I ended up becoming friends.

I found out that we had a lot of other things in common too, like an interest in black culture and history and a love of the arts, especially music. We'd hang for hours playing music and mixing tapes on our DJ gear. And we both fancied ourselves as junior league psychoanalysts. We talked a lot about mutual friends and coworkers - not to gossip - but to see if we agreed on what made that particular person tick.

One Friday at work not long after we became friends, Jerry suggested that we go out that night to the club. That surprised me a little bit. ...
