A Country Homecoming

Having been out of high school for the last ten years should have seemed like the blink of an eye. For me, it was an entire lifetime ago. I grew up in a small town. A really small town. The kind of place where everyone knew your business before you even did it. And a small town high school isn't the kind of place for an education. It's more like a popularity contest. And I played the part of the proverbial geek. I wore glasses and did my meager amount of homework. I read books in my spare time. And I didn't play sports, which in a small school is the death knell for any popularity you might have hoped to have. So when I graduated, I bolted as fast as I could and didn't look back. College was a much nicer place for me, as I found out that there were a lot more people like me in the world. And with all that freedom came my opportunity to start changing. Going to the gym help my physique. Contacts helped the bug-eyed look. And being around a lot more people helped me come out of my geeky shell and become a somewhat normal memeber of society. And when I looked back on who I was, it truly seemed like a different person a thousand years ago.

When I got the invitation to my ten year reunion, I almost threw it ...
