"You realize, sir, that you'll have to stay away from the wenches for a few weeks," said the artificer.

Without trying, I'd managed to avoid sexual liaisons for a couple months now, so I thought another few weeks would not be a problem.

"I think I can manage that," I said. "And besides, it is what the Queen desires of her knights."

"That she does sir, that she does," said the artificer. He was a middle-aged man, maybe 50, healthy and strong except for the peg leg. Like most tradesmen, he was dressed in simple clothes: sandals, wool trousers and shirt. Unlike most tradesmen, the clothing seemed of a particular good quality. And unlike most tradesmen his skin was clear and unweathered, his fingers were adorned with rings, his wrists carried bracelets, and a band of gold encircled his neck. I assumed the jewelry, detailed and well crafted, was of his own making.

"But as for the wenches," he continued, "it is my understanding that once I've completed the work ye'll be ten times as popular as before." He winked. "At least that's what the other knights report."

I had not thought that popularity with the wenches was an issue in this ...
