Chapter 4

After leaving Mercedes Santiago's tidy little flat with a cheap smirk of satisfaction, Latimer slipped behind the wheel of his ratty old Mercury coupe and decided that his next call should be at the Rexford Bay Country Club. The guard who met him at the gate was an old high school chum and waved him into the member's parking lot with a grin. The barroom was sleek and modern with lots of booked mahogany and polished stainless steel trim. A bank of windows ran along the wall affording a comfortable view of the picturesque 18th hole. It was mid-afternoon and the tables were half-filled with members playing the 19th hole so he looked for an open seat at the bar and sat down to survey the room.

A skinny little redheaded stewardess-Vince had to remind himself that high class places like this didn't hire barmaids-was traipsing back and forth from the bar to the tables. When she stopped to check on a table by the windows, Vince saw a patch of lightly tanned skin and strawberry blonde hair and his heart did a little flip. It always did that on those rare occasions when he ran into Veronica Chase unexpectedly. Vince had learned how to stifle any emotional reaction when running into her somewhere, someplace, but even after all these years, spotting ...
