THE GENIUS - CHAPTER I

The Princeton Years

My name is Terry Edwards and I am a 24-year-old graduate student working toward a Ph.D. in Mathematics at Princeton. If all goes well, I should finish my thesis this semester, polish it and defend it before a panel of the university's senior mathematicians next semester. If I defend it successfully, I'll be Dr. Edwards and will have the qualifications to pursue my goal of obtaining a teaching position at one of better undergraduate colleges in the mid-Atlantic region.

I had, in general, found my seven years at Princeton to be not only rewarding intellectually but also very enjoyable from a personal standpoint - except for the fact that during my senior year as an undergraduate, both of the parents had been killed in a horrible multi-car wreck on the Interstate near where they lived. As a result, my only family now consisted of a brother who was six years older than I and who was a very successful attorney practicing in Trenton. My parents were far from rich but the proceeds from their life insurance policies and the sale of the family home did provide a reasonable sum. By rights, of course, half of that inheritance should have gone to my older brother, but he had intentionally asked my parents to write him out of the will, at least until I got my Ph.D. so as to ensure that I would have enough money to complete my education.
