Chapter 10

Latimer's second thought upon leaving the police station, after something vicious and pretty illegal involving the D.A., was meeting with Jack Malone. Who else would be better at knowing what sort of vicious rumors were flying around Runyon City concerning Veronica Chase's pending arrest? He also knew that Malone wouldn't be sitting still on the story and figured giving a nudge to Veronica's side of the story courtesy of a little massage of the facts by his old buddy wouldn't hurt. Hell, Veronica was going to have a bad enough time getting through the funeral in the face of the rumors that were sure to be circulating. He didn't want to aggravate the situation by seeing those rumors verified in print. It would be better to have the truth published and not the innuendo. He knew that the Runyon City Times deadline was eight p.m. At three he walked into Malone's office. That would give them enough time.

"I got off the phone with Bert Mueller a few minutes ago," Jack said. "He tells me that Veronica was arrested at ten o'clock this morning."

"But no formal charges were placed, Jack. Mueller released her pending ...
