Professor Stuart tapped me on the shoulder as I was leaving her sociology tutorial and asked me to stay behind for a second. After the other students had filed out of the seminar room she came over and asked me to sit down.

"Kate, I was wondering if you would like to take part in a research project I am running over the summer?" she asked "I have funding from the Social Science Research Council and the Department of Health for a study into the exploitation of women in the sex industry and their healthcare requirements. It is a real chance to collect the evidence necessary to influence Government policy and - hopefully - finally get them to put an end to the degradation of women in the sex industry. It would be great experience for you if you are interested in postgraduate research after you finish your degree. We can pay you standard University research assistant rates."

The chance to work on a research project with Professor Stuart was much more appealing that the low paid job in a shop that I had assumed I would take over summer to keep my head above water and as a feminist I was all in favour of legislation against the sex industry.

I could hardly contain myself as I asked "What would be involved in the job?" ...
