It's good to be home for leave, thought Marine lieutenant Mike Camozzi, as he strolled through the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) campus. It was for him a bit of a walk through memory lane, since the university was his alma mater. He enjoyed seeing the various places he had frequented when he was a student, where he had studied, lived, and even partied. Presently, he was a 24-year-old US Marine officer, and he had just gotten back from Iraq two days before. Having survived the tough fighting for the city of Najaf, he wanted to relax, and enjoy Southern California, the place that he had known and loved so much. He wanted, at least for a while, to forget about the street-by-street fighting in which he participated in that far-away city, at the head of his Marine platoon.At least, that's what he had planned. However, the day after he got back, Mike had received an unexpected phone call from a young lady who introduced herself as Michelle Robinson, claiming to be a reporter for UCLA's student newspaper. Apparently, she had found out that he was on leave, and, as she put it, she wanted to do a story on a UCLA graduate that had been in Iraq. However annoyed he had been for being disturbed so unexpectedly, Mike wanted a good pretext for visiting the university's campus, and so accepted the interview offer, after quickly clearing it with his unit‘s media affairs officer, who took several minutes to give him some guidelines about what he could discuss: he would be free to offer his personal opinions, but had to clearly indicate them as such.
