The Lady and the Dragon

Chapter One:

Kira was nervous. The orcs were advancing faster than they'd anticipated. As she watched far overhead, she squeezed her knees into her mount's sides, signaling for the strong bronze dragon to bank southwest. She needed to see their encampment, get a rough idea of how many were still waiting.

Her mount, Arenth, banked as directed, swooping low over the tree line but high enough to keep his human safe. Any arrows or spells -if they made range at all- would bounce harmlessly off his scaly hide, avoiding her altogether. This was what made dragon mounts so invaluable: once bonded with their riders, they were the best protection you could ask for. And Arenth was no exception to that rule. Dragons matured much slower than humans, or even elves, and Rika had been brought to him after his last rider had perished. She'd been placed in his nest as an infant, sleeping with him each night, and returning to him after training every day from the time she was of age. She was bonded to him as much as he was to her. He was her family.

"Arenth, my god! There are hundreds of them!" The fear in Kira's voice brought a low rumble from Arenth's barrel chest. Kira felt it and tightened her legs around his flanks, just behind his wings, and leaned ...
