My wife, Kim, and I arrived at the airport to pick up Erin. Neither of us had seen Erin for three or four years, since she was about sixteen or seventeen.

Erin's story was a rather sad one. She was a friend of Kim's niece, and when her parents were killed in a car wreck when she was thirteen, she had no relatives to take her in. Kim's older sister had taken her in and given her a place to live. Once she graduated from high school she had gone off to college. Although you would think that she was much younger than we were, there really wasn't that much difference in our ages. Kim was the baby of the family, and her sister was thirteen years older than she is, so Erin was not that many years younger than Kim.

Erin came through the arrival gate, carrying her laptop and a large leather portfolio. As soon as we saw her, we knew exactly who she was. Erin was a little pixie. Even in her high heels, she would have had to stretch to reach five feet tall.
