Know When to Fold Em'

It had been a chaotic summer with their daughters home from college, but with the start of the Fall semester they'd packed up and departed to their alternate lives, leaving behind abandoned books, papers, assorted trash, and their parents. Deborah had taken time off her job to be with her family and had put off the clean-up of memories for as long as she could, but after a week, it was time to toss the last remnants of motherhood into the trash bin and resume her regularly scheduled life.

She cleared out one closet, filling a box almost to top, then checked under the bed where she found several discarded socks, a few dirty tissues and two feather boas left over from Halloween. Deborah tossed them into the box and carried it down the hall towards the garage, passing her husband's office.

Keith, her husband of forever, sat at his computer playing poker with his Internet buddies. It was an addiction he had only recently fallen victim to, and one that fortunately didn't include real money. At first his play had been an innocent distraction from his work as an environmental attorney, but when she woke up in an empty bed at four in the morning and found him still sitting at the video poker table, she felt as if he'd spent the night with another woman.
