Damon Kincaid set down his bags and looked around the hotel lobby. It was a pretty nice place for a conference; airy and well-lit, with collections of comfortable chairs scattered around the large room. Signs off to the side pointed the way to a series of smaller rooms; those would be where they'd actually hold the talks. He hoped that the conference would at least be interesting. His work at Berkeley was more as a computer tech than anything else; he'd finished a masters degree in Computer Engineering last year but hadn't moved on yet. His work with the biology group suited him; most of the biologists were discovering that they relied now on telecommunications and huge data storage systems that they didn't even understand, never mind knew how to administer properly. Running the network and keeping everybody's equipment doing what it was supposed to be doing was, really, quite a challenge.

But he felt as though his life were in a holding pattern. That degree was about the only thing that had really worked out, over the last few years. Computer scientists were independent types, and Damon found he had little to say to most of them outside of tech-talk. And women in the field were few and far between. Women in the field who were interesting - to him at least - were even fewer. He hadn't had a serious date in about two years; just quick meet-at-a-bar-and-go-to-bed kind of things that left him ultimately unsatisfied.

This conference was a chance to get out of the lab, a chance to maybe ...
