I was raised on an island called Foulness, close to the English Channel. This island was used by the government to discover and test new types of armoury as well as storing chemicals, supposedly for use in war times.

There were few shops on the island, no doctors, hospitals or dentists and just one small primary school. If you needed any of the other things then you left the island to get them.

Foulness had always been associated with the weird and wonderful. People who were born and bred on the island were said to be special in one way or another.

Now I'm not too sure what people meant by special but they were certainly a weird bunch, I know, I'm one of them.

The residents used to live in tied houses, i.e. houses supplied for their sole use by the land owners. I lived in one of these houses with my parents and older brother.

My mother had a couple of jobs. By day she worked in the local gentry's manor house, cooking, cleaning and general house keeping. By night she worked in the only pub on the island. I'm not sure if she liked to work ...
