Being Neighborly

It was 3:30am, and I was awakened by a God-awful blood curdling scream. I jolted awake, jumped from the bed and ran to the window and threw open the curtains, to see what the hell was going on outside. It was so dark out I could barely see anything, but I could make out a silhouette of a person in my neighbor's swimming pool. I ran downstairs and out the door, and jumped over the locked chain-link gate, to get into their back yard. I rushed as fast as I could to the deck, and found Becky my next door neighbor standing there naked, pointing into the pool at her husband Rick's equally nude and lifeless body, floating in the water.

I screamed at Becky to go call 9-1-1 and she took off for their house. I summarized from the scene laying out in front of me, as well as the naked man floating in their pool, that he and Becky had been skinny dipping, and that something had gone horribly wrong. I automatically went into lifeguard mode, jumped into the pool and grabbed a hold of him. I pulled and tugged and finally got him out of the water and onto the deck.

I began shaking him, to see if he would respond, but to no avail. I checked for a heart beat, and a pulse, then I leaned down and listened for shallow breathing, but again nothing. My mind took over from there, and I quickly set about giving him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. ...
