In the laundry room of my high-rise apartment building, it seemed like every weekend I'd meet someone new. After all, there were at least 250 units in the building, and I could probably live there for five years and never run into every one of my "neighbors", whether it would be in the lobby, the mailbox room, or up on the 30th floor where I washed my clothes each week.

One Saturday afternoon, when most people were out enjoying the day or running errands I decided to do some laundry. It was a good time to use the laundry room and I found only a few machines and dryers in use out of the two dozen available.

Odd, I thought, that the man was wearing what looked like a light, cootn bathrobe and flip-flops in what was kind of a public place. I supposed that he'd waited until he hadn't a thing to wear, what with the enormous amount of laundry he'd brought in.

I went about my business as a young woman entered the room. She came to empty a dryer near where I was loading a washer. A moment later, she nudged me with her elbow, and I spun around in response. Without a whisper, she quickly motioned with her eyes for me to look at ...
