A MODERN WEDDING

As he was waiting for Jan to arrive, Todd's mind wandered. It occurred to him that the wedding ceremony is permeated by a symbolism so totally outdated as to be ridiculous. Take for example the bride, attired in virginal white, being escorted down the aisle by her father, supposedly hitherto the guardian of her virginity, which in fact she lost time ago. The dad hands her over, veiled, to her husband to be. She is late in arriving, a quaint custom originated in times where brides were supposed to be apprehensive about having to yield to the unspeakable lusts of a male during the unknown events to take place on their wedding night. Then the minister, after delivering a sermon where fidelity and tradition are emphasized, tells the groom, at the end of the vows, that he may know draw the veil aside and finally kiss the bride!

It is a wonder that nobody bursts out laughing, thought Todd. These days, the bride walking down the aisle all dressed in pure virginal white, has most likely spent the previous night in bed with the groom, performing, naked of course, a variety of sexual acts some of which her mother would hardly consider, and some that her grandmother did not even know about. He smiled thinking of how Jan had performed, in a celebration mood, the night before.
