A year into my very first "real" job, I had two weeks vacation to schedule and, without a clue as to where I should go, I went to a travel agent and looked through dozens of brochures, trying to decide on a destination. I wanted to go abroad, that was for sure. But I wanted to be able to speak English. I wanted to visit a large city with lots of cultural heritage, but I wanted to see countryside vistas. It would've been easy to go to Canada, but I just didn't think of it as going abroad. After all, I could drive to Canada. It had to be a plane flight away, I decided.

New Zealand or Australia? No, too far. England or Scotland? Maybe. Then I came upon a travel guide to Wales. English-speaking, near enough to London (I could start out there and go west). Modern yet in many parts rural. Ocean views. Less-expensive than England, at least for lodging. I'd fly to Heathrow in London, rent a car after a day or two and drive to "The Westlands."

Two months later, I was driving away from London on the M-4 highway, 70 mph and then some, like everyone else. Learned which lane to keep to, not just which side of the road to drive on and, after a stop in Bristol, I crossed the River Severn into what really seemed a different world. Dark green forests, wisps of fog drifting down from higher ground---a sharp contrast to the sunny, bright green meadows I'd just left behind in England.
