The microorganism had done a very thorough job. Targeting anyone with an elevated testosterone level, it had decimated the male population, and a surprisingly disparate selection of the female as well (not all gym teachers were lost, but an astonishing number of exotic dancers were).

The remaining scientists, after venting their irritation at an educational system which had neglected to develop a more gender-balanced cadre of researchers and bench technicians in the fields of biology and microbiology and genetics and a host of others, had thrown themselves into the 24/7 study of the bug.

It could have escaped from one of the ultra secret biological weapons labs which the richer nations had established or revivified or finally funded adequately in the post 9/11 era. Or it could have mutated from any one of a number of nasty zoonoses which had spread from the shrinking wild animal populations. So far, the source was unknown, and since the bug had already apparently killed off the vulnerable members of the human species, perhaps, the scientists hoped, they had a cushion of time in which to explore its nature and possibly eliminate of it. The colloquial name for the disease was the t-plague, for the testosterone which made a man subject to its onslaught.
