It was another typical Saturday afternoon in West Virginia. A local freight train lumbered slowly uphill hauling a string of loaded coal hoppers. The air lay heavily on the hillsides. Everything seemed to have paused, waiting for the coolness of evening.

Ralph was on his way home from a visit to Shenandoah National Park. He had always wanted to see it and he finally was able to save up a week to go. His trip back was taking him through the heart of Appalachia, a scenic diversion from the direct route he took to get to the park.

Ralph's girlfriend hadn't been able to arrange time off so he went without her. She was not at all happy about him going alone. Susan had had her heart set on this trip. She had been there as a child and had vowed to return some day. Now the opportunity had passed her by.

Ralph promised her that when he could, they would go together. With this in mind he took special note of scenic locations that he knew she would enjoy. He would bring her back to them and they would enjoy them together.

Stopping at the railroad crossing waiting for the train to pass, Ralph opened the glove box and took out the box that held the engagement ring he had bought for her.
