Kathy's Christmas Surprise

Christmas, bah! humbug, that's how I felt about the season. Everything bad that has ever happened to me always happened between Thanksgiving and New Year's. If the choice were mine, I wouldn't go out doors until January second. Unfortunately, it never was my choice.

Let me give you an example, last year on Christmas eve, my husband at the time told me he was moving to Puerto Rico, with his twenty year old secretary to become a writer. The year before that my parents were killed by a drunk driver, and three years before I lost a much-desired child just as Christ supposedly was born in Bethlehem. Christmas and I were not the best of friends the only thing I wanted from Santa was to be left alone.

Take today for instance, as usual I had worked late. The stores of the mall were all closing when I finally hurried to my car. The weather had turned miserable since this morning when I arrived at work. It had been sunshine and bird song outside and over two hundred mall employees wishing me Merry Christmas everywhere I turned during the day.

It was Friday almost the last shopping day before Christmas, and it was bitter cold. I left the shelter of the mall and hurried toward my car. Ice covered the parking lot and sidewalks, and the snow was heaped up almost as bad as late January. It was going to be a terrible winter if ...
