Chapter 6 Go West Young Man

Roger was an excellent listener. At first he frequented bars to get tips but as time went on he decided to do some very aggressive techniques to get "the story". One time he hired on as a dockworker another he worked in a sweatshop for two weeks learning how the rich took advantage of the poor. Alternately he worked on the railroad and in a coal mine in western Pennsylvania and always his articles were accurate and most damning. In a few cases the editor had to squash or make major revisions to his work because it would have done damage to the newspaper. The paper didn't want to loose major advertising dollars from its top clientele. But still mister Ralston had to admit that Fitzwalter's work was top rate and at least most of Roger's articles got published.

One bright morning in late July of 1877, Ralston called his very talented reporter in. "Have a seat Fitzwalter! I've got something to say to you!" Roger raised a hand in deprecation. "I hope I'm not being sacked. This job keeps me in the trim." Ralston replied dryly, "Like that piece you wrote on the abuses of the local brothels? I suspect you enjoyed doing some first hand investigations of that can of worms but we won't go into that." Roger smiled thinly, "Thank you sir." "Well the in house God I kowtowed to has informed me that your talents are a bit to dangerous for the local yokels. They need a bit of a break and besides we need some top writing out West where big business ...
