I had just sat on the top step of my front porch to rest and think about my project when Bill had just suddenly popped up! I hadn't seen him in quite awhile, years!

After the hellos and all, I asked - "So tell me about those islands. That is where you've been, right? Just what islands were they anyway?"

"Jim, I'll just say it was no fun. We ran all day, every day, until some dippy naval officer came looking for something else and found us. I don't know the name of the small place; if it even has one. After our transport sank in the huge storm, we were cast ashore. Only seven of us lived. Two of those died in a day or so. I think they marked us a total loss, thousands died. I never saw a boat or airplane searching, or anything else until that weird Captain came by three years later. Most of his crew were women; young native women. He was going from one island to another selling them; in a US Navy boat! There were other sailors, regular navy too and they were all smiling."
